A carpet python crawled up a tree and strangled a mother marsupial to death, much to the horror of campers.
A baby possum was rescued from its mother’s pouch just seconds before a giant python swallowed her whole.
A 3m python attacked a possum at Coolum Beach Park on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast on the morning of November 27.
The python climbed a tree and strangled the mother possum to death in front of horrified campers.
Debbie and Richard Kemps – who were at the park at the time – said the python killed the possum within minutes.
“We had a dog and a possum that was bigger than it. You can imagine what a python would do to pets here. The park keeper noticed the possum’s pouch and quickly pulled the baby out,” Richard said.
The python slithered under a car before swallowing its mother. Coolum Beach staff used a broom to shoo the python into the bushes after it had finished its meal. The baby marsupial, just a few centimetres long, miraculously survived and was handed over to the Australia Zoo.
