La aldea de Gauriganj cría muchas serpientes, incluidas serpientes venenosas. Las serpientes se consideran animales sagrados y la gente también se gana la vida controlándolas.

Uttam Nath, de 44 años, dijo que la tradición de los aldeanos es ayudar a los niños a familiarizarse con las serpientes lo antes posible.

Dijo: “Los niños son entrenados desde los 2 años. Aprenden a controlar las serpientes para que, cuando crezcan, entiendan claramente los hábitos y principios de este animal”.
En este pueblo, los niños de 10 años pueden realizar actuaciones de control de serpientes con flautas para ganar dinero.
Las mujeres del pueblo tampoco temen a las serpientes. Cuando los hombres están fuera de casa, son ellos quienes cuidan de las serpientes. La gente de la aldea de Gauriganj también sabe cómo tratar el veneno y salvar a las personas mordidas por serpientes utilizando métodos naturales.
El Sr. Nath compartió: “Controlar serpientes es todo lo que hemos aprendido a lo largo de los siglos, de una manera completamente profesional. Este es un arte antiguo, pero los niños del pueblo aprenden a controlar serpientes, además de seguir necesitando ir a la escuela para tener un mejor carrera y vida.”
Kumati Devo, de 38 años, que comenzó a controlar serpientes desde que tenía 5 años, compartió: “Las serpientes están asociadas con nuestra infancia, pero no estoy segura de cuánto tiempo viviré con esta profesión”.
También añadió que hoy en día, la rápida urbanización y las regulaciones sobre las mascotas se han vuelto estrictas, lo que ha provocado que el número de serpientes disminuya gradualmente, amenazando la cultura tradicional del pueblo.
