That afternoon, Erin Rodriguez was walking home from a walk with her newborn son when she came across a turtle trapped in the mesh of a fence.
This is not uncommon in Rodriguez’s area, having previously rescued a turtle in a similar situation. So when she saw this scene, Rodriguez did not hesitate to stop and help the turtle escape from its trap.
The turtle was stuck in the mesh of the iron fence. |
“When I got closer, I saw that the turtle’s head and front legs were slightly entangled in the mesh of the fence. I didn’t think the turtle was completely trapped. If it was conscious, it could have just walked backwards to get out. At that time, I thought that just pushing gently in the direction it was going would be enough to help the turtle,” said Ms. Rodriguez.
The trapped turtle seemed to be the one that had been helped before, so it did not panic when someone approached but lay still, showing trust. To make it easier to “live virtual”, Rodriguez also took a photo with her husband before starting to help the turtle.
After taking enough photos to post on social media, Rodriguez began to lift the turtle and pull it away from the fence. But to her surprise, she realized that the turtle was not alone… Underneath the turtle, which was struggling because it was lifted off the ground, was a very large snake.
Below where the turtle lay was a very large poisonous snake. |
Rodriguez was too careless when he only glanced at the turtle’s condition without paying close attention to his surroundings. It turned out that before getting caught in the fence, this turtle had calmly climbed onto a very large venomous snake that was lying on the ground.
“I immediately put the turtle on the ground and stepped back. Can you imagine how shocked I was, my heart stopped beating for a few seconds. Suddenly I felt the adrenaline in my body rise, something in my mind told me to save the poor turtle,” Rodriguez recounted.
Because she was so scared, Ms. Rodriguez dropped the turtle back to the ground. However, she still managed to take a photo to calm down. |
The venomous snake remained indifferent to what was happening around it, and the turtle seemed to be completely fine with its condition, but the girl’s reason told her that it was better to try to do everything properly than to regret what she had not done. Rodriguez was determined to carry out the plan to rescue the turtle and get it away from its dangerous, unfamiliar “friend”.
Finally, the turtle was rescued and brought to safety. |
She went to find a shovel, intending to use it to lift the turtle while still keeping a safe distance from the venomous snake. But this time, perhaps sensing something was wrong, the snake slowly slithered away from the scene and into a hole in the garden.
In the end, the rescue went smoothly, and Ms. Rodriguez brought the turtle to a safe place, without iron nets or snakes.
