These incredible images show the moment a snake discovers an unsuspecting frog and then eats it whole, with the reptile showing nothing – it’s a healthy and nutritious meal. The images, taken at a lake in Shibpur, India, show the frog jumping from leaf to leaf without a care in the world.
However, the poor amphibian is completely unaware that beneath the surface lies a Checkered Keelback Water Snake waiting for its next meal.
The snake approached its owner, slowly climbed to the surface and gave it a smack that left it unable to keep up. The 6-foot-long snake then leaps up and Sᴡᴀʟʟᴏᴡs the frog, a process that wildlife photographer Rahul Bera, 27, said took about 45 minutes.
The snake appears to match the frog’s size at times because its mouth is relatively small compared to the frog’s size. However, by dislocating its jaws, the snake can grab the frog and slowly force it down its throat.
At times the snake holds the frog in the water and at other times it dives beneath the surface of the water with the poor amphibian firmly in its grasp.
When the feeding frenzy comes to an end, only a pair of loose frog legs can be seen sticking out of the snake’s mouth. It is left with a very large lump as the frog slides into its stomach.
Well, 45 minutes later, the snake finally finished its breakfast and decided to enjoy the few rays of sunlight to make its way through a dense cloud that covered its head, landing on a lily pad.
“I had to be very careful not to blow my cover, if the snake had any idea I was nearby as a defense mechanism, it would have swatted the toad away and disappeared,” Bera said.
