Brown house snakes are among the most common snakes in Southern Africa. They are not venomous, but like pythons, they are constrictors and use this method to hunt prey. They average about 50 centimetres (19.6 in), but can exceed 1 metre (39 in). Fortunately, they are harmless to humans, so there is no need to worry.
Dustin van Helsdingen , 39, Environment Manager, witnessed this wild moment in his backyard in Rustenburg. Dusty shares the story with LatestSightings.com:
Brown house snake begins to swallow its victim
“I was outside in the garden when I heard birds going crazy and making alarm calls at the bird feeder. When I went to investigate, I noticed that a brown house snake had grabbed what I suspect was a sparrow and was in the process of constricting it.”
“I called my wife and son to come and see. We watched everything unfold for about 45 minutes until the snake swallowed its prey and walked away.”

“My love for nature and photography taught me to appreciate and respect nature.”
It’s amazing what this snake can do.
“About a decade ago I would have killed the snake, but instead I learned to respect them, rather than fear them. It allowed me the opportunity to appreciate this experience and get closer to the action. Always respect nature, enjoy and value the experience without disturbing the animal.”
