Please forgive us if this puts you off eating your food, but by the way, this piece doesn’t have much charm. The Atretochoa eiselti was discovered when the Egyptians emptied a hydroelectric dam that crosses a river connected to the Amazon.

Six of these strange animals, each about a metre in length, were discovered in the lower part of the Madeira River in Rodovia, Brazil, by biologists.
The animals were discovered in November, but it took until today for experts to accurately identify the fish’s species, confirming that it is a rare creature that has only been occasionally sighted since 1968. It is actually more closely related to salamanders and frogs, but resembles a swordfish in appearance.
“Of the six we captured, one perished, three were released and two were held for research,” said Julia Tupaï, a biologist at Sato Atopïo Energy, the company that built the dam.
